Frequently Asked Questions
1. WHAT DOES WYNYARD LANDCARE DO?
We are a group of volunteers striving to fix local environmental problems. We plant native flora, remove weeds, repair degraded habitats, and train and educate the public, all in conjunction with councils and government agencies.
2. WHY DO WE DO IT?
HAVE YOU HEARD OF CLIMATE CHANGE? DO YOU KNOW WHAT BIODIVERSITY IS? DO YOU KNOW WHAT A RIPARIAN ZONE IS OR INVASIVE SPECIES? These questions are all related and they are the focus of Wynyard Landcare working to improve our beautiful local environment. Climate change is anthropogenic (i.e. it and its environmental impacts are caused by humans). Issues can emerge quickly requiring prompt action to mitigate effects. Wynyard Landcare is helping mitigate Climate Change and enhance biodiversity by re-planting the banks of creeks and rivers (riparian zones). The vegetation will help stop runoff and prevent erosion into the waterways. Trees shade water and ameliorate temperature fluctuations that may impact aquatic life. Our work will enhance the health of the river, its water quality and its ability to support its own distinct biodiversity. For more see: https://nre.tas.gov.au/Documents/Inglis_WQ-Pt1.pdf
In addition, the growth of vegetation will lock up the carbon that they rely on to breathe and grow whilst emiting the oxygen that we need.

The members of Wynyard Landcare are experts in their various fields. They share their skills during working-bees with volunteers and with the community through U3A (University of the 3rd Age) presentations and excursions, with social media, at workshops, and at open day events and local festivals.
