fossil bluff project

Picture
There are two sites that Wynyard Landcare (WL) has managed in the area north of the Inglis River (in the middle background); one at the Freestone Cove esplanade and one on top of Fossil Bluff paleo site. The photo shows how the site looked in 2024. Now, the group Biodiversity alive manages this area whilst Wynyard Landcare manages the lower firebreak section and the foreshore section.
Every project starts somewhere. Fossil Bluff is an outcrop near the Inglis River Estuary and is Wynyard's iconic fossil site, attracting many visitors. It is situated at Freestone Cove next to the Wynyard Golf Course and the Inglis River. It was historically cleared for agriculture and grazing at various times. Wynyard Landcare and the group Biodiversity Alive works with Parks and Wildlife and the Waratah Wynyard Council to restore the natural vegetation and to encourage mammals and wildlife to return to the area. In the early days, the sight would have been covered in large Eucalypt species that would have supported sea and wedge-tailed eagles, as well as many other species.
